complicit (working title)
As migrant settlers born in Lebanon now living on Dharug Country, I examine with my own family our complicities with the systems of oppression that we have benefited from and are folded into. We invite others into this conversation through new work with guidance from senior Dharug artist Leanne Tobin. I'll be working closely with family members who will feature in the works ; my parents Tania Abd and Edgard Abd, both living on Dharug Country - Liverpool, my two children born on Dharug Country Yasmeen el Haddad and Aram El Haddad and my husband Ludwig El Haddad. This work is a critical self exploration pointing to personal and communal historic and ongoing complicites. It is also for me an awakening and an homage to my family, my beloved homeland, the country I live and work on now - my acknowledgment of living and benefiting from colonisation and also bringing to surface the links that bind us all. I am honoured that I will be guided by Leanne's wisdom and friendship as I develop this work with my family, gently and with love. For me this work is my contribution to this foundational conversation, I start within my own family and extend this to the wider community. The new body of work comprises a multi channel video installation (most likely 6 vertical TV screens), print works with embroidery elements. Using video portraiture and digital collage the multiscreen installation centers the family members where the personal, communal and universal entanglements converge to create the complexity of our experiences.
